ZEUGMA

A structure called “House of Muses” was discovered within the excavations started in 2005 in the Ancient City of Zeugma, located on the shores of Birecik Dam Lake in Nizip district of Gaziantep. In this well-preserved house, thought to belong to a rich and cultured family of the period, the Muzalar mosaic, symbolizing 9 muses depicted for writers, poets, musicians, historians and philosophers, was found.

In 2012, İşbank made a commitment to support the House of Muzalar excavation for 5 years. Prof., one of the faculty members of Ankara University, Faculty of Languages, History and Geography, Department of Archeology. Dr. As a result of the work carried out by Kutalmış Görkay as the head of the excavation, 6 mosaics were found in the House of Museums. In these mosaics unearthed; There are Muzas in the main dining room, near the main entrance of the house, four women, known as ideal women in mythology and also called Heroines in ancient times, in the room used by the women of the house, two mythological heroines in the courtyard porch, and the sea gods and goddesses Okeanos and Tethys among the rich sea creatures in the courtyard. Head of Excavation Prof. Dr. Two books titled “A Passage from the Past to the Present: Zeugma” and “Between Two Worlds; From Life to Eternity, Houses and Graves in Zeugma”, written by Kutalmış Görkay, were published by Türkiye İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları in 2015 and 2020.

The excavation of the House of Museums was completed in 2022.
